How cloud-based ERP can solve your reshoring issues

The reshoring trend has helped bolster the American economy during its recent swell over the past few months. While this is undeniably a good thing, the major job movement presents some significant challenges to companies.

Specifically, making sure that the moves are indeed profitable in the long run is key to undergoing a successful reshoring process. As Pat Garrehy puts it in this article for Manufacturing Business Technology, many of these problems can be addressed and fixed with the implementation of cloud-based ERP system.

  • Better process visibility: One of the problems that the restructuring that comes with reshoring can present is the shuffling of operations, during which lags in productivity can get lost in the fold. Making the transition to the cloud can allow your ERP system to handle the greater loads of data needed to keep all your company's functions transparent.
  • Improved speed: With the cloud, deployment is always faster, meaning less wasted time and more resources being devoted to making a desirable product.
  • Eliminate slip-ups: Cloud-based ERP allows for more expedient transferal of data and greater control over multiple facilities, something that legacy ERP systems often lack. "Manufacturing cloud ERP modules serve every step in the manufacturing process to increase efficiencies, control costs and ultimately increase revenue," says Garrehy.
  • Mobile capability: The general societal trend towards working on the move with devices like smart phones and tablets lends itself to the cloud. Manufacturers utilizing the cloud can therefore access information pertinent to their operations not just on premises, but anywhere where they have a signal.

The advantages of moving to the cloud are clear, but making that move is easier said than done. Accent ERP has the expertise needed to ease the shift to cloud-based ERP for your Indiana, Ohio or Kentucky manufacturing business.

How to evaluate potential ERP solutions

As most manufacturers know now, an archaic ERP system can cause lags in production, and an overall hit to the bottom line. ERP has become a virtual necessity in the modern manufacturing sphere, and as such keeping up to date has become even more beneficial than before.

In an article for Manufacturing Business Technology, Jeff Carr catalogs some advice that those in the market for new enterprise resource planning software should take into account:

  • It is paramount that your eventual ERP system has capabilities specialized to your industry. Knowing that your software can be adapted to your needs will give you peace of mind and the assurance that you're making the right choice.
  • Workflow features are a must when it comes to manufacturing business technology. One of the core functions of an ERP program is the automation of operations that once required human attention, which ultimately saves both time and money.
  • Find a friendly interface. This will be what you look at while running your business for at least the next few years, so it needs to be something you find easily navigable and at least somewhat pleasant to view.
  • Don't underestimate the value of an ERP that can handle multi-facility duties. As Carr states, "This [current] environment presents a challenge to the corporate accounting team when trying to develop consolidated financial statements," troubles that connectivity can ease.

Using this checklist, don't be surprised if Microsoft Dynamics NAV rises to the top of the heap if you're manufacturing company is looking to invest in updated business management software. When that does happen, make sure you get in touch with us at Accent Software. We have the experience and the skills to make sure the integration of the software into your company's processes is as seamless as possible.

Advice for effective ERP implementation

One of the more challenging aspects of having an enterprise resource planning system is the integration of that system into your operations. Once the ERP is set up and running, it in theory should make your business practices leaner and easier to manage.

As the world of ERP evolves, it becomes more and more necessary to keep pace with the industry standard so that your productivity and efficiency reach the levels that your competitors' do. As Larry Korak of Manufacturing Business Technology puts it, "To make the most of new strategies, such as collaboration through social media, business intelligence and deep analytics, manufacturers now need a level of flexibility and agility that old, outdated ERP solutions or homegrown applications cannot provide."

So many times, the implementation of a new system is necessary. What can you to make sure the process is as expeditious as possible?

Korak believes that the devil is in the details. The more particular you are with your requirements, the better ERP vendors can meet your needs. He goes on to give a related tip, saying that specialization is key, and that finding it will "eliminate the need for costly modifications."

Perhaps most important is doing what you can in the beginning to make sure maintenance of the system in the future is as smooth as it can be. That comes with training, says Korak, who says that ensuring all employees are familiar and comfortable with the new system is "paramount" to the ERP actually working in the future.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV has the flexibility and the high-level of competency to adapt to your manufacturing business' needs, and Accent Software has the experience with that software to implement it effectively, as well as the expertise to train your staff in its management.

The importance of customization in manufacturing ERP

Each manufacturer is different, and each comes with its own problems that need to be addressed. Business processes have a tendency to become wasteful if not carefully monitored, and that supervision can be tough to do when you're dealing with all the rest that goes into making a company run. ERP software is increasingly becoming a necessity with manufacturers around the country having to keep up with the accelerating economy.

As Ranga Bodla of Manufacturing Business Technology wrote in a recent article, "Manufacturing and distribution have unique, and uniquely complex, processes and workflows that require functionality a vanilla ERP application can't provide."

So how does a manufacturing company decide which ERP solution is the right one for them? What do you look for if your manufacturing company is in the market for effective enterprise resource planning?

Bodla believes that the first thing you must do is look at an ERP vendor's reputation in the manufacturing industry. Who are its other customers (if any) and what are their opinions on the product? A related thing you must discover is the general media consensus on the vendor. Is it an industry leader? What are third parties saying about it?

A question that may not have been asked five years ago is now a near-must when it comes to ERP: is it cloud-based? As Bodla explains, "ERP applications built for the cloud have the open web standards and visual tools to make customization easy."

Lastly, whether or not an ERP maker has a "thriving partner community" can demonstrate to you how dedicated that company is to improving customer experience and offering the widest variety of options possible.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV excels in all of these categories, and Accent Software excels in implementing, customizing and running Dynamics NAV. If your Indiana, Ohio or Kentucky business is in the market for business management software solutions, give us a call.

Why manufacturers need to embrace business software

ERP software becomes more popular in the manufacturing industry with each passing year. And the new generation beginning to break into the manufacturing industry, says Phil Lewis of Global Manufacturing, "refuses to settle for unwieldy, confusing applications that only make their jobs harder. Instead they are demanding the same standards they are accustomed to in Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat when they need to check an order status, track their supply chain or establish a BoM."

This has led software companies to create more user-friendly, streamlined interfaces, ones that fit the sensibilities of the millennials that are now beginning to take hold in the manufacturing workforce. Lewis believes that there is a "clear business case" for having programs that mirror the aesthetics of the sleek iPhone and Android apps young people now use.

Lewis goes on to caution people valuing style over substance, emphasizing the utmost importance of balancing form and functionality, something companies like Microsoft tend to do with their manufacturing business software.

As the manufacturing sector gets younger as a whole, the use of ERP becomes more the standard for business management software. This makes it all the more important for companies to implement ERP into their operations to make sure their services remain competitive.

The Importance of Configuring Your Manufacturing Software

Each small manufacturing business has its own methods it employs that fit its particular needs. With these come issues specific to those businesses, ones that, should the business use ERP software, have to be addressed with customized solutions. This is why, as Katie Hilyar of Manufacturing Business Technology posits, "Configurability is incredibly important when you're seeking actionable business intelligence."

A tailored answer to each of your manufacturing problems can only be possible when the ERP software used has the capability of molding to your individual company. This can lead to higher process visibility, something that contributes to minimizing hiccups and getting the most profit out of a company. That ability to see the internal workings of your business and smooth any wrinkles that present themselves pays financial dividends.

Like Hilyar explains, "Configurability means being able to drive more efficient operations and better high-level decisions with a tool that can work the way you want it to — not one driven by a programmer's assumption of how your unique enterprise should operate."

The adaptability of an ERP software, and its ability to remain effective after each change, are vital factors that need to be taken into account when deciding what ERP software you should utilize and how it should be implemented.

At Accent Software, our expertise with industry leader Microsoft Dynamics NAV and considerable experience with incorporating that program into all manners of manufacturing companies make us the people to go to with your business management software needs. Should your Indiana, Ohio or Kentucky business be in need of manufacturing software solutions and consulting, give us a call and let us demonstrate how working with us can be profitable for you.

The Importance of the Small Manufacturer in the American Economy

In an article for Business Week, Harold Sirkin stresses the significance of manufacturers with less than 500 employees in their workforce. Sirkin purports that "it is generally from these small companies that the jobs of the future will spring," and that "many of these smaller companies are critical to the success of the big guys, supplying parts and components across a wide range of industries."

Despite this, the needs of smaller manufacturers are often forgotten. A report by the Center for American Progress showed that there are numerous obstacles between small manufacturing businesses and the venture capital they need to "restructure, grow, and scale up," and that their ability to utilize bond markets is highly restricted by "high borrowing and transaction costs."

We know that the success of small to mid-size manufacturers is a crucial component of the American economy. Still, running a manufacturing company can be a tough road. So what can you do to make sure your business is humming at optimum efficiency?

Having the right manufacturing business software is key to shedding your company's inefficient processes and ensuring your workflow is as streamlined and productive as can be. Having a quality enterprise resource planning system is becoming an industry standard due to its numerous time- and resource-saving benefits.

Finding, implementing and maintaining that software system can be a challenge, though. How can you assure yourself that your ERP software is doing the most it can for your company?

Accent Software is the solution for your Indiana, Ohio or Kentucky business' manufacturing ERP software needs. We have the expertise and experience with Microsoft Dynamics NAV needed to get your company's operations to peak profitability, and keep them there.

Why are manufacturing companies increasingly reshoring?

A recent piece by Pat Garrehy on Manufacturing.Net outlines why many manufacturing businesses are choosing to abandon overseas facilities and bring their operations back to domestic soil, opposite the industry trend from 1998 to 2008, when many companies were offshoring to foreign locations that offered lower production costs.

Recently those international benefits have taken a hit, however, and many companies are realizing that "U.S.-based manufacturing provides closer proximity to their customers, increased product quality, better protection of intellectual property and reduced regulatory compliance risk."

The ever-advancing world of cloud-based ERP software also presents attractive options for reshoring manufacturers who are looking to reduce inefficiencies as much as possible. As Garrehy explains, "Enterprise resource planning systems, especially manufacturing ERP software, help companies by providing visibility into every function across many departments." That visibility is vital to the finding and amending any wasteful tendencies taking place within a business.

The centralization and shareability of data as well as increased deployment speed of cloud-based ERP systems all factor into why America is experiencing the "largest and longest stretch of manufacturing increases in a quarter century." The implementation of such systems can ultimately lead to the faster and more productive execution of crucial manufacturing duties.

These benefits are quickly becoming recognized industry-wide. But the installation and customization needed to get such beneficial applications up and running at maximum efficacy can be hard and time-consuming.

That's where we at Accent Software come in. Our employees have over a decade of experience working with Microsoft Dynamics NAV and possess the expertise needed to raise your manufacturing processes to peak productivity. Should your Indiana, Ohio or Kentucky manufacturing company require business management software solutions, give us a call.

Why should manufacturers switch to cloud-based ERP?

Many manufacturing companies now employ enterprise resource planning into their business operations, with subsequent financial success. But with the advent of the cloud and the development of cloud-based ERP management, many manufacturers have become reluctant to take the next step in making their workflow more efficient and less costly. So why is migrating to the cloud advantageous to manufacturers? What should motivate them to make the transition?

A newcomer in the manufacturing ERP world has recently taken the plunge into cloud-based ERP, according to an article by Tony Kontzer of Tech Time. Firstronic, a Michigan-based maker of electric circuit boards for a number of industries, was initially hesitant about making such an an against-the-grain decision.

However, soon the benefits became clear to them. Says Kontzer: "The leadership team realized that the clean slate they were operating from represented a significant opportunity to get away from buying — and babysitting — a cadre of servers. They made the decision to try something new."

Despite the trepidation, this decision has allowed Firstronic to set up satellite facilities in less than two months, "about as fast as it gets" with those types of projects, and perform other tasks throughout the company with productive results. Since employing the cloud-based ERP system they chose, their compound annual growth rate has been 35%.

The perks of utilizing both manufacturing ERP software and its cloud-based counterpart are evident. But the process of integrating a new business management software or updating your existing one can be daunting.

That's where Accent Software can help. We serve manufacturing businesses in the Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky region and offer a wide variety of services, from the incorporation of ERP efficiency into your company, to the upkeep of ERP management, to the training of in-house employees in its usage.

New Report Reveals Trends in Small Business Manufacturing Software

A recent report by technology review firm Software Advice demonstrated some telling trends on the topic of "buyers motivation" in the market for small business manufacturing software. The study showed that nearly half of prospective buyers are businesses who still primarily keep record using "paper or other manual methods, such as Excel, to manage processes."

Not surprising was, in a related find by the study, the "need for better planning/management tools [as] the top reason prospective buyers were seeking software solutions." Many manufacturing companies are still plagued with the inefficiencies and inaccuracies of a manual manufacturing data management, thus leading to the understandable search for answers. Other top reasons listed for companies switching were the desire for "a better user experience" and the need for "improvement of efficiency and/or organization."

While companies breaking into the ERP world for the first time represented a significant portion of those surveyed, the majority remained those who already employed ERP solutions but felt that they were not satisfying the demanding needs that arose day-to-day. Many expressed that the ERP system they currently utilized was not manufacturing-oriented, and therefore sometimes gave rise to more issues than they alleviated.

This sentiment was echoed by manufacturing IT expert Ian Chizmar, who noted that "many ERP solutions are not specific to the manufacturing market," and that "the best options for most buyers in this industry are specialized suites."

Accent Software knows what it takes for manufacturing ERP software to function at a high level in small and mid-sized businesses. We're determined to find custom ways of addressing any of the problems you might have with managing your business, whether it be because of an ineffective ERP system or your dissatisfaction with manual procedures.
